Ashok Gehlot called a meeting of Rajasthan Congress MLAs tonight before Delhi tour

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called a meeting of Congress MLAs at his official residence in Jaipur on Tuesday night amid speculation that he would contest for the post of Congress President. The meeting will start at 10 pm after the dinner organized for the news agency’s vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar. PTI informed citing sources.

Some Congress leaders said the current Assembly session would be discussed during the meeting.

Gehlot, seen as a strong contender for the post of Congress President, will leave for Delhi on Wednesday. The process of filing nominations for organizational elections will begin on September 24 and will end on September 30.

Gehlot, however, had tried to downplay the news of him being at the forefront and said that he would try till the last minute to persuade. Rahul Gandhi to contest. Rajasthan Congress recently passed a resolution supporting Rahul Gandhi’s reappointment as party president.

Congress will hold elections on October 17 to choose its president. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8 and the counting of votes will take place on October 19.

Amid the Congress President’s election and discussions on its possible candidates, party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi met General Secretary KC Venugopal at her 10 Janpath residence in Delhi on Tuesday evening.

Venugopal termed it a “regular meeting” to discuss pending organizational issues and said “anyone can contest” which would be “free and fair and transparent” when asked about it by the media. This meeting between the two leaders has come at a time when Shashi Tharoor and Ashok Gehlot are being seen as contenders to enter the fray.
