Assam by-elections: 73.77 percent votes cast in 5 seats

The Thaura constituency recorded the highest turnout at 77.56 per cent, followed by Gosaigaon at 77.20 per cent and Bhabnipur with 76.84 per cent.

The Election Commission of India said that 73.77 per cent of the nearly eight lakh eligible voters cast their vote in the by-elections to five assembly constituencies in Assam, which concluded peacefully on Saturday. Election Commission data shared by a state government spokesperson said on Sunday that women voters exercised their franchise more than men, while none out of four transgenders voted in five constituencies. Although the number of male voters in the five constituencies was slightly more than 10,000 compared to females, the female voter turnout was 73.38 per cent against 73.17 per cent of male voters. The Thaura constituency recorded the highest turnout at 77.56 per cent, followed by Gosaigaon with 77.20 per cent and Bhabnipur with 76.84 per cent.

Lowest turnout was recorded in Tamulpur, in which 67.84 percent voters turned out to vote. The polling percentage in Mariani, the fifth constituency, was 71.70, according to the Election Commission data.

The electoral fate of 31 candidates has been sealed in EVMs, with eight each in Gosaigaon and Bhabnipur, six in Tamulpur, five in Thaura and four in Mariani. The counting of votes will take place on November 2.

A senior police officer said on Saturday that no untoward incident was reported from any constituency where tight security arrangements were made. Bypolls for Gosaigaon and Tamulpur were necessitated due to the death of sitting MLAs, while office-bearers from Bhapanipur, Mariani and Thaura resigned from their seats to join the ruling BJP.
