Assam civic polls results: BJP leading in 548 wards, Congress leading in 61 wards

Assam Municipal Board Election Result: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a massive lead over Congress in early trends. According to the State Election Commission, the ruling party is leading in 548 out of 977 wards, while the Congress is ahead in just 61 and another 125 wards.

A total of 70% voter turnout was recorded in the municipal elections held in Assam on Sunday.

Elections to 80 municipal boards comprising 977 wards across Assam ended at 4 pm on Sunday. Out of 977 wards of 80 mandals of the Municipal Corporation, 57 wards have already been declared unopposed and elections have been held for 920 wards.

2,532 candidates were in the fray in the civic polls.

The ruling BJP fielded the maximum number of candidates (825), followed by the Congress with 706 and the BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) with 243.

Kamrup’s presiding officer Chandan Kalita said that for the first time in these elections, EVMs were used instead of ballot papers.
