Assembly elections in Tripura were held on February 16, while Nagaland voted on February 27.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with BJP President JP Nadda met Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Sunday to discuss the formation of new government in Tripura and Nagaland.

Assembly elections in Tripura were held on February 16, while Nagaland went to polls on February 27.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to secure a majority in Tripura with 32 seats.

In Nagaland, it got 12 seats in Nagaland while its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party got 25 seats.

Sarma is also the convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance.

According to a source, “The cabinet structure and government formation were discussed in the meeting.”

Another source said, “Though the name of (caretaker Tripura chief minister) Manik Saha has been supported by the party high command, a section of legislators insisted on the name of Union minister Pratima Bhowmik as the new chief minister. Took her to Agartala. BJP’s Tripura unit said.

Sarma met Bhowmik and Saha separately in Agartala before reaching Delhi for a meeting with Shah to finalize the names of ministers in Tripura and Nagaland.

The results of the assembly elections held in Nagaland and Tripura, and another northeastern state of Meghalaya, were announced on 2 March.
