Assam delegation to visit Mizoram for border talks on August 9, 10, says official

A five-member delegation led by Assam Border Security and Development Minister Atul Bora will be on a two-day visit to Mizoram from August 9 to discuss issues related to the inter-state border dispute. An official gave this information on Friday.

He said a special officer and private secretary to the Assam Border Security and Development Minister had informed the Mizoram government on Wednesday that the Assam delegation would reach Aizawl next Tuesday to hold two-day talks on border issues.

An official of the Mizoram Home Department said that Bora will be accompanied by three officials including Assam Housing and Urban Minister Ashok Singhal and Assam Border Security and Development Commissioner and Secretary GD Tripathi. He said that the Assam delegation would discuss the inter-state border issues with the representatives of the Mizoram government.

The Mizoram team will be headed by Home Minister Lalchmalliana. Mizoram shares a 164.6-km-long border with Assam, which has had several flare-ups over the years.

The decades-old border dispute between the two northeastern states mainly stemmed from two colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933. Mizoram accepted the demarcation under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BERF), notified in 1875, which covered vast parts of the region, which now comes under Assam. , as its actual limit. However, the Assam government maintained that the demarcation made under the 1933 notification was its constitutional limit.

Last year, at least six Assam policemen and a civilian were killed and around 60 were injured in clashes in a disputed area near the border between the two states. In August last year, representatives of both the states held talks in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. They agreed to maintain peace and amicably resolve the inter-state border dispute through dialogue.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said in a press conference on July 16 that Bora would visit the neighboring state soon and hoped to start talks at the earliest.
