Assam: Opposition disrupts Governor’s speech in Assembly, walks out on MLA’s ‘dog meat’ statement

As the opposition MLAs stood up and raised slogans, seeking to know what action has been taken against the MLA, Governor Kataria had to cut short his speech by 15 minutes.

A Maharashtra MLA’s remarks about the alleged habits of Assamese people to eat dog meat triggered an uproar in the Assembly on Friday, with opposition legislators disrupting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria’s speech and later staging a walkout.

As the opposition MLAs stood up and raised slogans, seeking to know what action has been taken against the MLA, Kataria had to cut short his speech by 15 minutes.

MLA Bachchu Kadu has reportedly proposed in the Maharashtra Assembly that stray dogs be sent to Assam to control their growing population as they are consumed by the local people in the northeastern state.

The issue was first raised by Congress MLA Kamalakhya De Purkayastha, who questioned the “inaction” of the Assam government against Kadu, pointing out that a state police team had recently arrested the party leader over his alleged remarks against the prime minister. When the proceedings of the House resumed after a brief interval, the opposition again raised the matter in the House.

AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam urged Speaker Biswajit Daimary to take suo moto cognizance of Kadu’s remarks for breach of privilege and “make him come to the Assam Assembly and apologise”.

Islam’s aide Aminul Islam claimed that Kadu was among the MLAs who camped in Guwahati during the change of government in the western state last year. Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi and CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar are also joining the opposition MLAs demanding action against their Maharashtra counterpart.

As the Congress MLAs went to the Well of the House, Daimary asked them to return to their seats and look into the matter through proper channels.

Amid the uproar, all the opposition MLAs staged a walkout.
