Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on Saturday said the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is not an issue anymore. His remarks came at a press conference called to announce the assembly election schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand.

Responding to a question on the credibility of EVMs by the losing parties, Chandra said, “EVMs are no longer an issue.” “EVMs have been in existence since 2004 and over 315 crore voters have used EVMs. We are proud that this country has developed such a machine which gives accurate and fast results.

At least one Ballot Unit and one Control Unit make up the EVMs. The Election Commission will deploy Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) with EVMs at each polling station in the assembly elections of five states to increase the transparency and credibility of the election process as VVPATs – also known as paper trail machines – allow a voter Lets him or her verify the vote.

The Election Commission’s statement on the election schedule said that arrangements have already been made to ensure the availability of sufficient number of EVMs and VVPATs for the smooth conduct of elections.
