A Shiv Sena delegation on Thursday met Maharashtra Director General of Police Rajneesh Seth and asked him to find the “real” perpetrators involved in the attack on rebel MLA and former state minister Uday Samant. Samant’s car was attacked in Pune on Tuesday night, a video of which went viral on social media, showing a crowd around the vehicle and shouting slogans.

Police have so far arrested five people including Shiv Sena’s Pune city unit chief Sanjay More and its Hingoli-based leader Baban Thorat. Thorat, who was detained from Mumbai, is accused of inciting Shiv Sena workers to attack the vehicles of the rebel MLAs. He has been sent to police custody till August 6.

He said, ‘You don’t see any weapon in someone’s hand but still false complaint is filed. They (party workers) are in custody without any reason. They were not even present on the spot,” Shiv Sena spokesperson Arvind Sawant told reporters after meeting DGP Seth. Sawant was accompanied by other leaders of the Uddhav Thackeray-faction such as Neelam Gorhe, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Council, Army Secretary Vinayak Raut and MLCs Sachin Ahir and Manisha Kayande.

On Wednesday, Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai had termed the attack as a “spontaneous” response to “traitors”. “I do not support violence. No one should take law into their own hands and should not resort to such barbarism. But these are spontaneous reactions of people. If someone cheats and then roams freely, then not only Shiv Sena workers but common people of Maharashtra also do not like it. A minister in the previous Thackeray government had said.

The delegation also informed the DGP that Shiv Sena workers are being threatened and attacked in many parts of the state and sought police intervention in the matter.
