Attack on Syria port: Two injured

Three other militia fighters were also injured.

At least two members of a pro-government militia were killed in an Israeli attack on the Syrian port of Latakia, a war watchdog said on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s strike before dawn marked the second time that Israel has struck a major cargo hub since the outbreak of Syria’s civil war in 2011.

The Israeli strike – one of about 30 that has hit Syria this year – caused significant damage with a plethora of containers set on fire.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two members of a pro-regime militia were killed in the Israeli attack.

“He suffered serious injuries and succumbed to his injuries” at the hospital in Latakia on Wednesday.

Three other militia fighters were also injured.

Syrian state media said the containers killed in the attack contained “engine oil and spare parts for cars and other vehicles”.

But the observatory said the cargo was “weapons and munitions”.

Iran, an ally of the Syrian government, condemned the air strikes, calling them “inhuman and immoral” and an example of Israel’s “provocation of crisis in the region”.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh accused Israel of “making a mockery of all international laws, rules and norms by repeatedly attacking Syrian territory under false pretenses”.

Since the start of the conflict, Israel has regularly carried out airstrikes on its conflict-torn neighbour, mostly targeting Syrian government troops as well as Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters.

So far this year, Israel has targeted Syria nearly 30 times, killing 130 people, including five civilians and 125 loyalist fighters, according to Observatory data.
