Audemars Piguet raises the bar for gem-setting and gender-fluidity

A capsule collection of Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon models addresses the growing interest in complications among female watch collectors

From jewelry timepieces worn as pendants or brooches (don’t forget the miniature minute repeaters of the 1890s) to the Royal Oak Concept flying tourbillon in 2018, the Audemars Piguet has garnered a fair amount of attention for women. So this streamlined collection of six new Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon models shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Flying Tourbillon addresses the effect of gravity and ensures accuracy, but this time the brand also brings in Haute Joelery.

Brilliant- or baguette-cut gems are to be expected – four models make up the most classified blue sapphires, while two of them check the rainbow box that most luxury (and fashion) watchmakers favor these days. The latter, with gems of about 3.5 carats, include rubies, tsavorites, emeralds, topaz, tanzanite and sapphires. The invisible gem setting for each of the two timepieces was 150 hours with 208 baguette-cut graded blue sapphires!

The open barrel of the hand-wound caliber 2951, visible at 11 o’clock, draws attention to the watch’s power source. The Flying Tourbillon makes its rounds at 6 o’clock and is also set with exquisitely cut gems. At a gender-fluid 38.5mm, it hugs the wrist, and the 18-karat white gold case (there’s also a pink gold option) can carry this intricate watch through any event, day or night. Water resistant up to 20 meters with a thickness of 11.6 mm. More details will follow a personal check of the timepiece.

Prices from approximately CHF 211,700 to CHF 440,100 and this collection can be requested at Audemars Piguet Boutique.
