The Australian Cricketers’ Association extended its support to Tim Paine, saying it was “sad” that the wicketkeeper “felt the need to resign” as the team’s Test captain.

Paine stepped down as Australia’s Test captain after it emerged that he had sent an unsolicited explicit image of himself along with lewd messages to a female colleague in 2017.

“While respecting Tim Paine’s decision, the ACA is saddened that he felt the need to step down as captain of the Australian Test team,” the ACA said in a statement. “While sadly, this was a historic mistake that was a private matter between consenting individuals. Tim fully cooperated in an integrity investigation by Cricket Australia in 2018 in which he was acquitted.”

Reports claimed that a Cricket Tasmania employee was outraged by “an obscene, unwanted and unwanted photograph of Mr. Penn’s genitals in addition to his obscene sexual remarks”.

Addressing reporters on Friday, Paine apologized to teammates and supporters and said he felt resignation was his only option. The stumper was promoted as the captain of the Test team in 2018 following the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Under his leadership, Australia had won. Ashes in the UK in 2019.

The ACA said, “Tim humbly recognizes the honor that comes with Australian captaincy and his resignation reflects the honor in which he played so well during a difficult period for Australian cricket.” “Tim’s captaincy is widely regarded by the cricketing world as being instrumental in restoring pride in both his performance in the Australian team and the spirit with which he plays the game.

“While Tim has clearly made a mistake, he will continue to have the full and unequivocal support of the ACA.”

Paine will continue to be part of the Australian team. Australia will take on England in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on 8 December. Paine, who moved in September to repair a bulging disc in his neck, has been included in the squad despite a cloud of injury.
