Australian diplomat ‘delighted’ to attend Panguni Festival in Chennai

The Australian Consulate General in South India described the ceremony as “a truly wonderful experience”.

The auspicious occasion of Panguni Uthiram is here. Devotees across Tamil Nadu are engrossed in the festive fervor today. On this day, people worship Lord Ayyappa, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu with special focus on Lord Murugan. This year, Sarah Kirlew, Australian Consulate General in South India, also participated in the festivities. And Sara was “delighted to see” the vibrant procession in Mylapore neighborhood of Chennai. Sara shared a few pictures from attending the festivities in a Twitter thread. He also shared a video showing glimpses of the Panguni festival held at Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai.

From pulling the iconic “Ther Rath” to experiencing the pleasant smell of “camphor and jasmine in the air”, Sara revealed that she experienced it all. In the picture, Sara is standing on some high balcony, with the Ther Rath giving her a beautiful background. The video shows a wave of devotees pulling the grand chariot. In another post, Sara can be seen posing at the forefront of a huge rangoli. Sharing glimpses of the festival, the Australian Consulate General wrote in the caption, “Delighted to witness the joyous Panguni festival in Mylapore this morning. Majestic hand-pulled ‘ther’ chariots, colorful clothes and kolams, and the air all sweetly scented with rich camphor and jasmine. Truly an amazing experience of South India in Chennai.”

Many users expressed happiness over Sara’s inclusion in the celebration. A user commented, “Glad to see you enjoying Tamil Nadu festival.. May god bless you with a blissful life!”

Another wrote, “This is the beauty of South India, rich in cultural traditions and inclusive.”

So far Sara’s post has got more than 81,000 views. The Australian Consulate General reportedly serves Australia’s interests in Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry and Lakshadweep.

Talking about the festival, the Panguni festival is organized between mid-March to mid-April at the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Chennai. It is a nine-day festival which begins with the hoisting of the flag and on the seventh day, the festival of Arubathimoovar is celebrated.
