Australian Open link Dominic Thiem says ‘I’ve been vaccinated’

Dominic Thiem said on Tuesday that he has been vaccinated against COVID-19 and is aiming to return from injury in Abu Dhabi to prepare for the first Grand Slam of 2022 at the Australian Open. The 2020 US Open champion’s readiness to declare vaccination status lies with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. Australian Open champion Djokovic and Medvedev, who became the US Open winner after Thiem, have both declined to confirm whether they have been caught. The issue of vaccination is at the center of discussion in world tennis ahead of the Grand Slam to be held in Melbourne on January 17-30.

Officials said players without vaccinations would not receive special exemptions for the event, potentially excluding Djokovic.

The nine-time Australian Open champion is one of several players who have refused to share his vaccination status, doubting whether he will defend his title.

Thiem has no such qualifications, which is confirmed to take part in Abu Dhabi in Vienna ahead of the Australian Open in December.

“Needless to say that both events require a vaccine to play out, and in my case I have already been vaccinated.”

Last week, the Austrian health minister advised Thiem to do a job against Kovid-19.

Thiem said earlier this month he was waiting for a vaccine from US pharmaceutical company Novavax, which uses an ‘inactivated’ protein-based formula.

“I recently saw some news about this and I made it very clear that I would get vaccinated. Hopefully next time things don’t go as far as I saw last week.”

Thiem, 28, and ranked ninth in the world, is making a comeback after a wrist injury that has kept him off the court since August.
