Recently, a video has surfaced on social media in which more than 25 children are seen shivering in a small autorickshaw. The video also shows the teacher who is responsible for seeing that children reach school safely.
In the video, a man is seen pointing to the rescued children and asking the teacher several questions as to why they are being taken to school like this. Transport for school children in India may seem convenient in urban areas, but rural areas are yet to develop. Children still have to compromise on safety to get to and from their schools.

After the video surfaced on the internet, several reports suggested that the video is of a government-aided primary school in Avudayanur village in Pavoorchatram, Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district. Children loaded into autorickshaws appear to be between the ages of six and ten. After a while in the video, worse pictures are seen from the rear of the auto, where kids are piled on top of each other.
Tenkasi’s Chief Education Officer Muthulingam Kabir has now ordered an inquiry from the teachers and headmaster of the school. As The New Indian Express reports, the responsibility is also being thrown on the school administration, who were supposed to arrange vans or buses, but they only resorted to auto-rickshaws. Muthulingam said, “An inquiry has been ordered into the incident and action will be decided on the basis of the inquiry report.”

Apart from probing the case, Pavoorchatram police also booked 38-year-old Athiappan, the autorickshaw driver in the video, for violating the Motor Vehicles Act and seized the vehicle. The matter has caught up with the authorities ever since, as children have lost their lives in several accidents due to overloading of vehicles in the past.
