Azamgarh Lok Sabha bypoll turns interesting as Rashtriya Ulama Parishad supports Guddu Jamali of BSP

by-election for Azamgarh The parliamentary seat in Uttar Pradesh has turned interesting when the Rashtriya Ulama Parishad, the political outfit of Maulvi Amir Rashdi Madani, extended support to Bahujan Samaj Party candidate Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali. With a triangular contest, the Samajwadi Party may find it difficult to retain the seat as the Bharatiya Janata Party has once again fielded Bhojpuri singer Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’ to take on SP’s Dharmendra Yadav, observers say.

After getting the support of RUC, Jamali has claimed that now his victory is certain. The main reason behind this is said to be the dominance of Rashtriya Ulema Parishad in Sadar, Mubarakpur and Gopalpur assembly seats which are part of Azamgarh parliamentary constituency. In the 2017 UP assembly election, the BSP was successful in winning four seats with the support of the Rashtriya Ulama Parishad.

Voting for Lok Sabha by-election in Azamgarh district will be held on June 23 and all the political parties involved in this contest are working hard to win. Ram Darshan Yadav, the founding member of SP and former MLA, had joined the BJP two days ago.

RUC spokesperson Talha Rushdie has said, “It is a collective decision that we will support the person who has stood by the people of the district in their difficult times. There was a demand of the people of the district that Guddu Jamali ji should be supported, because he has proved himself. The National Council of Ulema has decided that Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali will be supported. At the same time, an attempt was being made to spread confusion among the people of Azamgarh. I think after this support today this confusion will be over.”

Analysts say the RUC announcement is bound to hurt the SP’s trusted Muslim-Yadav alliance. Apart from Guddu Jamali, another reason for this is being told that Ram Darshan Yadav is going to BJP, because he is considered to have a lot of influence in the Mubarakpur assembly seat of Azamgarh.

Speaking to the media after getting the support of the National Council of Ulema on Monday, Jamali said, “I am now convinced that this is my victory certificate. The people of the opposition were creating confusion from day one. If you go to our Muslim brothers, they say that Dalits are not voting, then why are you spoiling your vote by voting for them. Whereas the ground reality is completely different.

Samajwadi Party leader and former minister Ramasare Vishwakarma, however, has claimed that all secular parties are supporting and campaigning to make SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav victorious. “The Samajwadi Party Has the support of Rashtriya Lok Dal, People’s Party, Suheldev Party and Congress Party. All the parties which are against Bharatiya Janata Party are in favor of Samajwadi Party and SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav will win with huge votes.
