BA.5 Covid variant is 4 times more vaccine-resistant, suggests study

According to a new study published in Nature, BA.5 – the latest subvariant of Omicron and the dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2 in the US – is four times more resistant to COVID-19 vaccines. The Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are currently the major strains of fresh COVID-19 cases in the US.

The study showed that the subvariant is four times more resistant to messenger RNA vaccines than earlier strains of Omicron, including Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus Comments.

In a recent report, the Mayo Clinic said stress is “hypercontagious” and contributing to hospitalizations and ICU admissions.

People who have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19 are nearly five times more likely to contract the virus than those vaccinated and promoted, while 7.5 times more likely to be hospitalized, and death. 14 to 15 times more likely. Gregory Poland, head of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group.

The two new subvariants were first observed in South Africa in April and quickly spread around the world and also have a high transmission rate.

They carry mutations on their spike protein – the part of the virus that binds to ACE2 receptors on human cells so that they can enter them.

The BA.5 strain represented 65% of COVID-19 cases in the US for the week ending July 9, according to the latest data from the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

It is not yet clear whether the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants evolved from the original Omicron variant, as experts believe that they probably evolved from the earlier BA.2 Omicron variant.

Meanwhile, WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan has asked people to be prepared for the fresh waves of Kovid-19.

The WHO chief said that amid the introduction of new variants, which are more transmissible, immunity developed and there are concerns of more and more hospitalizations.

“We need to be prepared for these #COVID19 waves – each new #type will become more transmissible and immunity developed – more infected numbers will translate into more hospitalizations and disease. All countries have them,” Swaminathan wrote on Twitter. There should be a data driven plan to respond quickly to changing circumstances.”
