Maharashtra cabinet minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Wednesday issued a set of guidelines to be followed by all schools and colleges in the wake of the alleged sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls in Badlapur city that set off a wave of protests.
Lodha held a meeting with the vice-chancellors of over 100 colleges and other officials before announcing the measures.
1) In every female washroom, female staff has to be present compulsorily.
2) Staff of canteen, bus, security, and other staff all should have police verification compulsorily.
3) Make small committees of female parents and hold meetings every month. Senior management and school heads should note the issues of the committees.
4) Immediately self-defence/self-protection classes should be started in schools and colleges.
At least 17 police personnel and eight railway cops were injured in stone-pelting and violence at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during protests on Tuesday. 72 people have been arrested in this matter, officials said.
Thousands of protesters blocked railway tracks at the station and stormed the school building, where the alleged sexual abuse of two girls by the school sweeper took place last week.
According to reports, internet services in the town have been suspended in the wake of the protest and subsequent violence.
