Ban on sale of beef in Manipur’s Ukhrul district

According to an NGO, Tangkhul Naga Long, a mysterious disease has engulfed dozens of cows and buffaloes in the northern part of the district bordering Myanmar.

Following the death of several cows and buffaloes in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, an NGO, Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), has banned the sale of beef in any form within the district. A TNL notification states that no slaughter is allowed within the district.

A mysterious disease has engulfed dozens of cows and buffaloes in the northern part of the district bordering Myanmar, the notification said.

The activists alleged that the district authorities have not taken any steps to identify the disease and educate the tribals in the interior areas. It is feared that many people may fall prey to some serious disease.

In other parts of the state beef is sold for free.

The police said that meat sellers do not have a mandatory license to open meat shops.
