Barcelona will be unable to register new players in summer, says La Liga president

Barcelona need to raise some funds to register new signings next season, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas

Barcelona recorded an impressive win against Real Madrid in the latest chapter of El Clasico on Friday and are currently on top of the table in La Liga. But his troubles off the field are not over yet. Barcelona’s financial problems have been well documented.

But the Catalan giants have been embroiled in another controversy after it emerged he allegedly bribed a senior member of Spanish football’s refereeing committee over several seasons.

Now it seems that Barcelona will not be able to sign or register new players in the upcoming transfer market.

speaking in ft Business At the Football Summit in London, La Liga chief executive Javier Tebas indicated that Xavi’s side would not be able to sign players in the summer.

“As of today, Barcelona have no room in their budget to spend in the upcoming transfer window. Barcelona has been involved in questionable behavior that has had an impact on LaLiga – and we are acting accordingly. We have decided that they cannot sign any more players. We have strict economic controls. Barcelona will have to cut their wage spending and transfer from €650 million to €450 million. They have to reduce their investment in players and we have encouraged them to sell players as they can spend 40 per cent of the amount they generate in the sale.

Reportedly, Barcelona will have to raise £178 million by selling existing players if they have any chance of entering the transfer market this summer.

The latest news comes weeks after Barcelona president Joan Laporte suggested his club would take a £178million wage cut and not need to sell any players.

Despite their financial issues, the Camp Nou-based outfit had spent big in the summer of 2022 on the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Jules Counde and Rafinha.

Barcelona’s spending spree was made possible when they asked first team players to take pay cuts, sold their domestic TV rights and even their in-house media studios. The fan-favourite club are still believed to be in debt of around £1 billion.
