‘Based on Ponniyin Selvan Kalki’s script’: Mani Ratnam on Rajaraja Chola as Hindu king

Ponniyin Selvan 2 is releasing on 28 April.

Tamil director Vetrimaaran said that it would be wrong to present the Chola king Rajaraja Chola as a Hindu, as “Hinduism did not exist during that era”.

Ahead of the grand release of the sequel to Ponniyin Selvan, the entire star cast of the epic fantasy drama is on the promotional spree. Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus is one of the most awaited Tamil films of this year and has kept the audience enthralled ever since the release of its teaser. The team was first in Coimbatore and then on Monday, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Vikram Prabhu and director Mani Ratnam were present at a press meet in Chennai.

In a conversation with News18, when asked about the controversy that arose after the release of the first part of the film in September last year, in which Rajaraja Chola was shown as a Hindu king. To which the director replied, “Why are you introducing religion in Ponniyin Selvan’s film? It is a film based on Kalki’s script. We should celebrate the achievements of Rajaraja Chola.” Ratnam also said that these are unnecessary controversies around the film.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by the great novelist Kalki Krishnamurthy. After the film’s release, Tamil director Vetrimaaran said that it would be wrong to present the Chola king Rajaraja Chola as a Hindu, as “Hinduism did not exist during that era.” Dressing in saffron, or projecting Rajaraja Chola as a Hindu king, such things keep happening in the society,” Vetrimaaran said.

Kamal Haasan also supported him while many disagreed.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 is scheduled to hit the theaters on 28 April. The first part of the story describes the early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who later became the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). The film was the highest grossing Tamil film of all time. Kamal Haasan’s Vikram left behind.

Meanwhile, the team will reportedly travel to various parts of the country including Kochi, Bangalore and Mumbai, covering all major cities.

The film stars Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Prakash Raj and Rahman in lead roles. The film is being bankrolled by Lyca Productions along with Madras Talkies. Songs and background score is composed by AR Rahman. The epic drama is also special because it will be the first South Indian film to release in 4DX format.
