‘Batgirl’ casts Ivory Aquino to play first trans character in DC film

Yeoh’s appearance will mark the first time a live-action film adaptation of a DC Comics title will feature an openly trans character.

‘When We Rise’ star Ivory Aquino has been signed to play Alicia Yeoh in the upcoming DC Comic film ‘Batgirl’.

The character, who first appeared in the 2011 issue of “Batgirl” by Gail Simone and penned by Ardean Saya, is the best friend of the titular superhero aka Barbara Gordon.

The film, set on HBO Max, also stars Leslie Grace, JK Simmons, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton and Jacob Scipio.

The film is being directed by Adil Al Arabi and Bilal Falah.

Aquino, a transgender person in real life, is best known for her appearances in the Netflix series “When They See Us” and “Tales of the City”, as well as on ABC’s “When We Rise”.
