Bayern Munich part ways with CEO Oliver Kahn minutes after winning 11th Bundesliga title

By India Today Sports Desk: FC Bayern Munich have parted ways with club CEO Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic only minutes after they snatched their 11th straight Bundesliga title on the last matchday on Saturday, 27 May. Bayern were handed a win after their biggest rivals Borussia Dortmund drew against Mainz at home in their final league stage game in the tournament.

The club informed about their decision right after the title win in an official statement.

Kahn, who took over the position in 2021 succeeding Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, will be replaced by Jan-Christian Dreesen with immediate effect, the club said in a statement.

“It was a difficult decision to part ways with Oliver but we came to the conclusion that based on the overall development a restaffing of the top position in the board,” Bayern said.

Bayern beat Cologne 2-1 thanks to a 89th-minute winner from Jamal Musiala and benefited from Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw to win the title on goal difference.

They were eliminated from the German Cup and the Champions League in the last eight despite changing coaches in late March with Thomas Tuchel taking over from Julian Nagelsmann in a surprise move.

Kahn is one of most legendary figures in German football, having captained both club and country. Goal-keeper by trade, Kahn was known for his no-nonsense attitude.

Kahn and Salihamidzic were under scrutiny for their decision to fire Julian Nagelsmann as coach in March and replace him with Thomas Tuchel right before the team’s Champions League and German Cup exits.

Tuchel said Friday that even a Bundesliga title win would not mask what has been an unsatisfactory season for the Bavarian powerhouse.

Kahn responded to his firing on Twitter, where he congratulated the team and said he’d like to celebrate with the players “but unfortunately I can’t be there today because I wasn’t allowed.”
