Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will miss his side’s top-of-the-table clash with Bundesliga high-flying Freiburg on Sunday due to ongoing problems with his shoulder, coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed.

“Manuel won’t play, he’s still in pain. I hope he can come back next week, but Freiburg will be too early for him,” said Nagelsmann, whose team will now be without their captain for the second game in a row .

“It’s annoying, but that’s it,” he said.

Neuer missed Bayern’s 4-2 Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen in the middle of the week with an injured shoulder, but had played every single minute of the league season so far.

Nagelsmann confirmed he would be replaced once again by reserve keeper Sven Ulrich on Sunday.

After winning just one of their last six games in the Bundesliga, Bayern Freiburg are under a lot of pressure ahead of the game.

The perennial champions are currently in fourth place, two points behind second-placed Freiburg and four points behind league leaders Union Berlin.

With Union set to host Freiburg in Munich and Borussia Dortmund this weekend, Nagelsmann insisted it was up to Bayern to nab two surprise packages at the top of the table.

“It’s less about the performance of the union and Freiburg and more about our own,” he said. “It’s up to us to get back where we want to be.”
