BBMP to conduct new survey of weak, dilapidated buildings

Two buildings have collapsed in the city in two days. This has prompted the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to conduct a fresh survey of dilapidated and dilapidated buildings across the city for a structural audit in the interest of public safety.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta said that apart from reviewing the survey conducted in 2019, he has given a month’s time to the eight Zonal Joint Commissioners to conduct a fresh survey.

notice issued

After the building collapsed in 2019, the civic body had conducted a survey and identified 194 dilapidated buildings in five areas. Notices were issued to 77 owners of such buildings. However, no action was taken since the pandemic broke out in the city. As per the available information, the most vulnerable and dilapidated structures were found in Yelahanka region (67), East (53), South (38), West (33), and Mahadevapura (3). There is no description of such buildings from other areas (Bommanahalli, Dasarahalli, and Rajarajeshwarinagar).

Shri Gupta said that the action taken on the basis of the old survey will be reviewed. “A report on the action taken will be submitted in two days, such as whether residents of weak and dilapidated buildings were evacuated, whether the structures were repaired or whether the building owners demolished the structures,” he said.

regional level teams

For the new survey, the Joint Commissioner will form teams at the zonal level along with the officers of various departments. “Incidents of building collapse are not new. However, it is important to conduct surveys to identify structurally vulnerable buildings that pose a threat to public life to ensure that such incidents do not recur.”
