Fizzy drinks are generally high in sugar, which is considered to be “more harmful than beneficial to health”. To understand the phenomenon in detail, researchers conducted an “umbrella review” to evaluate the health effects of excess sugar consumption. The review included 8601 studies focusing on added sugar in processed and packaged foods, table sugar, and other sweetening agents. The researchers excluded natural sugar – found in whole fruits, vegetables and dairy products – from their review.

The review’s evidence suggested that high sugar consumption is associated with 45 negative health outcomes. These include high blood sugar, high blood pressure, obesity and weight gain, tooth decay, respiratory problems, and depression.

So what can you do? Should You Give Up Your Favorite Soft Drinks Completely? The answer is no! Researchers say that a person can limit their soft drink intake to one per week to avoid major health problems. “recommended reducing consumption of free sugars or added sugars to less than 25 grams per day (about six teaspoons a day) and limiting consumption of sugary drinks to less than one serving per week (about 200-355 ml a week) adverse effects of sugar on health,” the study concludes.
