No matter how much you love oranges, have you ever thought of making a bag out of them? The idea may seem outrageous; But a Jordanian food artist has done it. You read that right! Food artist and molecular gastronomist Omar Saratvi has created a luxury handbag with orange peels. to wonder? Omar’s creation is a high class luxury product which is also eco-friendly. In a video released by Reuters, Omar explains the purpose and process of making leather from orange peels. “One of the things I’m currently working on is to process fruit and vegetable leather in new ways, to use it as an eco-friendly material, to turn it into luxury brands,” he said.
First, Omar chose fresh Oranges from a local market. “I buy oranges from here. I peel it and start processing it through different steps,” he says. For that, it takes about two weeks to process the orange peels and make the ingredients workable. “Later on, I call it ‘digital fabrication,’ get the design we want, and cut it out using a laser,” he said. Then Omar leveled the material so that the rough surface would not be a problem when designing.
orange peel It’s not the only organic material Omar has worked with. They have also made face masks and tents out of brinjal leather.
During the interview, Omar said, “We can create exceptional products with modern design through available technologies.” They have used this process in the fields of fashion, accessories, high-end bags and furniture.

Omar also posted about the bag on his Instagram page. He described the materials used and wrote in the caption, “Orange peel leather on gold plated brass with hand carved malachite stone.” He worked on the bag with Bahrain-based designer Nouf Alshekhar.

Collaboration on this bag took about a year of experimentation. In an Instagram post, Omar wrote, “After a year of trial and error, finally the “Orange Peels Leather Bag” is coming together beautifully.”
