Alleging massive rigging, the BJP on Sunday demanded cancellation of civic polls and fresh polling in Asansol and Bidhannagar. In a letter to the State Election Commission (SEC), BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that there was widespread rigging during the elections on Saturday, but the police remained mute spectators.

“We demand that the polling in these two municipal bodies should be immediately canceled and fresh elections should be ordered. We are not making such a demand for Chandannagar and Siliguri as voting in these two municipal corporations is not just a spectacle. In the letter, Majumdar cited the Calcutta High Court’s direction to the SEC to ensure free and fair elections.

There are no plans to cancel elections in Bidhannagar, Asansol, Chandannagar and Siliguri and preparations for counting of votes are in full swing on Monday, an SEC official said. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that the BJP was preparing the ground for an imminent defeat by alleging rigging.

Ghosh told PTI, “A section of the BJP is demanding abolition of district committees and Sukanta Majumdar is busy diverting attention from the crisis within his party by making absurd demands.”
