Bengal’s Ram Chandra Dom will be the first Dalit Politburo member, say CPI(M) sources

A seven-time MP and member of the CPI-M Central Committee from West Bengal, Ram Chandra Dom will be the first Dalit representative in the Politburo, the party’s highest decision-making body.

CPI(M) sources told IANS that the party’s central committee meeting, which is being held at the Nayanar Academy Hall in Kannur, Kerala, as part of the 23rd Party Congress, has taken a decision on this.

The CPI(M) has never included a Dalit leader in its politburo since it was formed in 1964 after splitting from the CPI.

Ashok Dhawale, leader of All India Kisan Sabha from Maharashtra and former acting secretary of Kerala CPI-M and ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener A.K. Vijayraghavan will be the other representative of the Politburo.

CPI(M) sources said they are looking forward to meeting senior leaders in the party’s highest decision-making body S. Ramachandra will replace Pillai and Hannan Mulla.

Kerala ministers P. Rajeev and KN Balagopal will be included in the party’s Central Committee, the party’s second-largest decision-making body.

Two women leaders of the party, P. Sathidevi and both former MPs CS Sujatha will also be included in the CPI(M) central committee.

Former minister J. The possibility of either Mercikutty Amma and former MP TN Seema is also under consideration.

Party sources said senior party leaders from Kerala P. Karunakaran and Vaikom Viswan will be dropped from the CPI(M) central committee as they are over 75 years of age. Politburo member S. Same applies to Ramachandran Pillai, who will be kept out of the party politburo.

The possibility of inclusion of farmers’ movement leader and former Kerala MLA P. Krishnaprasad and former MP P. Biju in the central committee is still under consideration.
