The police tried to persuade them to go away but they remained adamant and staged a sit-in inside the premises raising slogans.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers on Saturday barged into the residence of Karnataka Home Minister Araga Gyanendra killing BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettar, who was murdered in Dakshina Kannada district.

Members of the BJP’s student wing, holding a saffron flag of their organisation, stormed the premises of Gyanendra’s bungalow at Jaimahal here and raised slogans of ‘we want justice’. He also demanded a ban on the Popular Front of India and its affiliates, whom he accused of killing Hindutva activists and their growing influence in the state, especially in the coastal districts bordering Kerala.

The police tried to persuade them to go away but they remained adamant and staged a sit-in inside the premises raising slogans. Later, the workers tried to raid Gyanendra’s house. Finally the policemen dragged him out of the bungalow. Some of them were lathi-charged for opposing the police’s bid. Later, the activists were driven away from the spot in government vehicles.

Nettar, a district level functionary of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in Dakshina Kannada, was killed on Tuesday night by motorcycle-borne assailants when he was on his way home after closing his poultry shop. The police have arrested Zakir (29) and Shafiq (27) in this connection. Police sources, without giving details, said one more person has also been taken into “custody”.

Two days after the murder, Mohd Fazil, a resident of Mangalpete in Suratkal on the outskirts of Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district, who was standing outside a shop, was murdered by four unidentified assailants on Thursday night. No one has been arrested so far, although 20 people have been questioned.
