BENGALURU: Commercial Street, one of Bengaluru’s major shopping hubs in the Central Business District (CBD), will remain closed for 14 days from Monday night to address issues related to the recent works undertaken under the Smart City project.
The redeveloped Commercial Street was opened by former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in July. However, the stone road soon started showing signs of damage.
Rajendra Cholan, managing director of Bengaluru Smart City Limited (BSCL), told TOI: “The paving stones were damaged by vehicular movement before enough time to repair the road. We have already imposed a penalty of 10% on the contractor and demanded replacement of the pavers. Cholan said that out of the budget of Rs 3.8 crore, Rs 1.2 crore has already been released, adding that due to the damage, the road would be closed again for redevelopment.
Another source said the pavers would be replaced before work on the carriageway could begin. Pipeline laying has been completed.
The redevelopment using concrete pavers in yellow, magenta, gray and brown was recommended by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport, inspired by the roads of Europe. The project was announced in 2019. Work began in May 2020 but was delayed by the pandemic.
