Best to Buy 200 AC Electric Double Decker Buses

BEST will buy 200 more AC electric double-deckers for public transport in the city, and the fleet of twin-deck buses will reach around 450 in the next two years.

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will procure 200 more AC electric double decker buses and will be deployed as public transport in the city. According to a report by ETAuto, the civil transport provider will be adding these double deckers to its fleet in a phased manner. Lokesh Chandra, General Manager, BEST, announced that the double-decker fleet would reach around 450 in the next two years. The Maharashtra state government is taking several steps to accelerate clean mobility and curb emissions in the city.

The double decker will increase the carrying capacity as these buses can carry 100 passengers including standees in a single ride. “It will also reduce the waiting time for passengers at many bus stops, especially on corridor routes for office-goers”, he added, adding that there were “substantial numbers” of small-sized buses, including AC mini and midsize.

Currently, BEST has 48 non-AC double-deckers, and has already floated tenders for around 200 AC electric twin-decker buses. Bids for this will start before the end of the month. The General Manager has also announced that more double decker buses will be procured on wet lease.

Addressing the recently held Maharashtra EV Policy 2021 highlights and discussion, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Government of Maharashtra, Aaditya Thackeray said that Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will have a total of 1800 electric buses by mid 2023. ,

BEST will have a total of 1800 electric buses by the middle of 2023. The announcement was made by Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Government of Maharashtra while addressing a virtual session for Maharashtra EV Policy 2021. Out of 1800 buses, BEST will deploy around 45 per cent buses on the roads of Mumbai. As a part of its EV Policy 2021, the Maharashtra state government has set a target of 25 percent electrification of public transport in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad and Amravati.
