Biden: Not in India’s interest to ‘accelerate or increase’ oil imports from Russia: Biden – Times of India

Washington: President of the United States of America Biden told the Prime Minister on Monday Narendra Modi It was not in India’s interest to “accelerate or increase” its oil purchases Russia The White House said it stands ready to help New Delhi further diversify its energy imports.
Biden made the remarks during a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Modi that were “constructive” and “productive” and that their conversation was “not hostile,” White House Press Secretary Jane saki told reporters.
The virtual meeting between the two leaders took place in Washington amid some unease over India’s position on the Ukraine crisis as well as its decision to purchase concessional Russian oil. The Modi-Biden virtual meeting lasted for about an hour.
Saki soon told reporters at her daily news conference, “It was a constructive call. It was a productive call. It’s a relationship that is extremely important to the United States and the president. I take it as a regressive call.” I won’t see it.” After the conclusion of the Modi-Biden virtual bilateral.
While the two leaders have met almost multiple times and also in personal settings, this was the first time Biden and Modi had a virtual bilateral relationship.
During the meeting, Biden said that it is not in India’s interest to accelerate or increase its oil imports from Russia. So far, India imports one to two percent of its oil requirement from Russia, while it imports 10 percent from America.
Saki said the United States stands ready to help India further diversify its energy resources. India buying oil and gas from Russia, it insisted, is not in violation of any sanctions. “But I’ll let them speak for themselves,” she said.
Responding to a question, Saki said no decision has been taken on the CAATSA sanctions on India, which is proceeding with its decision to purchase the S-400 missile system from Russia.
In October 2018, India invited Russia to buy five units of the S-400 Triumph air defense missile system to enhance its air defence, despite warnings from the then Trump administration that it may be invited to go ahead with the contract. Signed an agreement worth USD 5 billion with US sanctions.
The US has already imposed sanctions on Turkey under CAATSA for procuring a batch of S-400 missile defense systems from Russia.
Saki told reporters that Modi and India have spoken vigorously against Russian atrocities in Ukraine.
