Biden vows to take in more refugees

WASHINGTON: The Biden administration said the US will accommodate 125,000 refugees and their families next year, fulfilling an earlier pledge to raise the cap cut under his predecessor to a historic low.

The White House set a proposed annual limit in a report to Congress, saying there were unprecedented numbers of displaced people around the world due to conflict, humanitarian crises and climate change. The administration makes annual recommendations in consultation with the parliamentarians.

Officials had earlier announced their intention to increase this to 125,000 for the fiscal year beginning October 1.

Releasing the report on Monday, the State Department said the United States is committed to leading efforts to provide protection for humanitarian crises and to promote sustainable solutions, including providing rehabilitation for the most vulnerable.

In setting the target, the administration said it would focus on several key groups, including Afghans at risk because of affiliation with Central Americans, United States, LGBQT refugees and members of the predominantly Muslim Uighur ethnic group, who goals of the Chinese government. President Donald Trump limited the number of refugees to 15,000, the lowest since the 1980 Refugee Act took effect. President Joe Biden faced criticism for being slow to lift it after he took office, eventually setting in at 62,500 under pressure.

Despite recent withdrawals from Afghanistan, the US will fall short of that number by the time the fiscal year ends on September 30.

I commend the Biden administration for setting a target of 125,000 refugee admissions over the next fiscal year, which targets my colleagues and I have been advocating for it since April,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. to be admitted this fiscal year, I acknowledge the challenges I have inherited with the US refugee admissions program due to the anti-immigrant actions of the previous administration.”
