Police said Shanmugasundaram (third brother of AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam) is the AIADMK candidate for Ward 24. When a car belonging to Mr. Panneerselvam’s relative was crossing the Agraharam area and approaching Perumal Koil section, the DMK men stopped the vehicle. As soon as the news spread, some AIADMK people also reached.

When the police got information, a large army led by Periyakulam DSP Muthukumar and Returning Officer Punithan also reached the spot.

The police tried to disperse the crowd, but both the DMK and AIADMK workers got into a heated argument. When officials intervened, the vehicle owner claimed there were 20 saris and 20 dhotis which, he said, were meant for distribution to the staff of the school run by Mr. Panneerselvam’s family.

In no mood to listen to the claim, the DMK men insisted that the vehicle be impounded. Ultimately, the police directed both the parties to file a complaint. Further investigation was on.
