Bird flu: Kerala authorities ordered to kill chickens, ducks, other domestic birds within 1 km radius

Alappuzha, Kerala:

An outbreak of bird flu has been reported from Thakazhi panchayat in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, following which the authorities have ordered the killing of ducks, chickens and other domestic birds within a one kilometer radius of the affected areas.

District Collector A Alexander presided over an urgent meeting of senior officials of the district, including animal husbandry, health and police departments, on Thursday to take stock of the situation in the wake of the flu outbreak.

Official sources told news agency PTI that the administration has ordered the killing of all chickens, ducks and other domestic birds within a one kilometer radius of ward number 10 of Thakaji gram panchayat and nearby areas to prevent the spread of the virus. .

Officials said the affected area has been declared as a containment zone, while the movement of vehicles and people in the area is restricted.

Apart from this, the District Collector has also banned the use and sale of eggs, meat and manure of ducks, chickens, quails and domestic birds in the affected areas.

He told PTI that the ban would be applicable in Champakulam, Nedumudi, Muttar, Viyapuram, Karuvatta, Thrikunnapuzha, Thakazhi, Purkkad, Ambalapuzha South, Ambalapuzha North, Edathava panchayats and Haripad municipal area.

Rapid response teams have been formed by the Animal Husbandry Department to capture and destroy the birds at Thakazhi.

In the meeting, the Assistant Conservator of Forests was authorized to monitor and inspect whether the migratory birds have been infected with the disease or not.

According to officials, the Animal Husbandry Department has been directed to submit daily reports on bird flu prevention activities in the district.
