New Delhi: Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Tuesday claimed that the recent Income Tax raids on some of her party colleagues were leaving the ruling BJP feeling “panic” ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

He also ridiculed the government’s claim that central agencies work independently, saying “we are illiterate, uneducated” to believe it.

Incidentally, Bachchan’s daughter-in-law and actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for questioning in a case related to the 2016 ‘Panama Papers’ global tax leak case.

Official sources had said that his statement was being recorded under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

However, Jaya Bachchan did not make any direct comments about her daughter-in-law’s questioning.

Asked about the action of central agencies against his party leaders, he said, “They (government) are upset. They have many tools and are misusing them… ‘Hawa badi curry hai, lal topi sab’. Opposition members are demanding the withdrawal of his suspension. He was suspended for his alleged unruly conduct and the government has demanded an apology from him.

He alleged that his remarks were also an expression of despair as the opposition members are demanding justice from a government which is “unjust and unfair”.
