The BJP won five seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, with the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party getting two seats each.

BJP’s Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre, Shrikant Bhartiya and Praveen Darekar won along with NCP leaders Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar. Shiv Sena candidates Amshya Padvi and Sachin Ahir also won.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) could not manage to get its sixth candidate elected. Despite the numbers being low, the BJP was successful in getting a big victory in the elections.

Responding to the victory, Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis said, “We have chosen all five candidates. In Rajya Sabha, BJP got 123 votes. In council elections we got 134 votes. For our 5th candidate. We were not votes. But they got more votes than two Congress candidates.”

The BJP had fielded five candidates while the MVA had fielded six candidates for the 10 MLC seats.

The BJP has 106 MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly, while the remaining votes for its candidates have either come from independents, or smaller parties or other parties.

As per reports, all the candidates secured a minimum quota of 26 votes to make it to the upper house of the state legislature.
