‘Blackmail, rape, murder’: Many open sources for police in Sonali Phogat case

The death of social media star turned politician Sonali Phogat is getting curious and curious. After Phogat’s family alleged foul play and the postmortem report mentioned “multiple blunt force injuries”, the Goa Police has registered a case of murder and started an investigation into his “unnatural death”.

These new developments have given a new twist to the story. First, the police concluded that the BJP leader died of a heart attack as he was brought dead while visiting the coastal state to shoot a film at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Anjuna.

Based on the autopsy report of the Goa Medical College’s Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Anjuna police registered a case against two of Phogat’s associates, who may possibly have links to the incident.

The copy of the autopsy report accessed by News18 shows that the details have been “reserved for chemical analysis”. The report further states, “The histopathology and serological reports of the tissues have been preserved. However, there are many blunt force injuries on the body. In view of the above, the investigating officer has to find out the manner of death.”

Phogat died on Monday, August 23 at a private hotel in Anjuna and is said to have reached Goa a few days back with a group of acquaintances. The family of the BJP Mahila Morcha leader insisted that they would allow the post-mortem only after a case of murder was registered by the Goa Police and alleged that the police was dragging their feet in the matter.

However, just hours after the case was registered, she indicated that she had “multiple blunt force injuries” on her body.

Sources close to the investigation told News18 that Goa Police has started a detailed background probe into the background of Phogat’s personal assistant (PA), Sudhir Sangwan, and his associate Sukhwinder.

“They are also looking into the concerns raised by the family about how Sonali Phogat was blackmailed and even raped. An earlier tragedy involving the mysterious death of her husband Sanjay Phogat is also being probed. All angles and possible people involved are being looked into and will be brought in for questioning,” said a source.

In this background, News18 has also reported how former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda is under investigation after Phogat’s brother alleged that one of his employees had close links with the politician. There is also a floating casino in the waters of Goa near Kanda.

Phogat’s brother Rinku Dhaka in his formal complaint to Anjuna police named two of his associates as possible reasons for his alleged murder. Dhaka makes serious allegations where they claim that Phogat’s PA Sangwan and his aide Sukhwinder were blackmailing the leader with an objectionable video. Dhaka claims that the video was made after Phogat was administered some intoxicant and raped her. Dhaka, in her complaint, states that her sister told her that once Sudhir had served her kheer, which was fun, and later she started feeling restless and lost consciousness.

Dhaka further makes serious allegations that Sudhir was allegedly suspected of being involved in the theft at the BJP leader’s house in Haryana last year. He told the police that hours before he was informed of his demise, Phogat called his family and raised suspicions on Sukhwinder, and was unhappy with his associates. He also claimed that Phogat had told the family during their conversation that “Sukhwinder and Sudhir will go to any extent” and then the line got cut. Dhaka further alleged that there was no scheduled shooting in Goa as claimed by Sudhir and it was a premeditated murder planned by both to take control of Phogat and his property. He also said that after informing the family about Phogat’s death, Sudhir switched off his phone and fled so that he could not be traced.

“We had advised him to stay away from them and asked him to return to Hisar. When we went to the police with our complaint, they kept it there and did not take any legal action. We are also appealing to Prime Minister Modi to kindly intervene and help us in getting justice for my sister. He is with BJP for 15 years and has worked tirelessly for the party. If the investigation is not done properly in Goa, then we will demand a fresh post-mortem in AIIMS, Delhi.

“An FIR under section 302 (murder) has been registered at Anjuna police station on the basis of the complaint of the brother of the deceased,” Goa Inspector General of Police Omvir Singh Bishnoi said in a media statement.

While Goa Police is initiating a detailed investigation, Phogat’s teenage daughter has also appealed for justice for her mother.

“My mother deserves justice. The matter needs proper investigation and the guilty should be punished severely,” Phogat’s daughter told news agency ANI.
