BMW employee fired for going to Burger King during break wins Rs 17 lakh compensation – details here

new Delhi: Britain has awarded nearly £17,000 (roughly Rs. 17 lakh) in compensation to a BMW employee who was sacked for visiting Burger King during his lunch break. During an evening shift at the BMW factory in Oxford in 2018, Ryan Parkinson was sacked for an unscheduled break of more than an hour to drive to Burger King. Ryan then filed a lawsuit against GI Group, a recruiting agency, for wrongful dismissal.

Parkison was reprimanded on his way back from the fast food restaurant for allegedly not telling his superiors about the lunch break. “My co-workers were discussing their favorite restaurants. I claimed I wanted Burger King but everyone else wanted kebabs,” the former employee recalled to LBC News. Also Read: OMG! Parkinson, whose lawsuit claimed the treatment was discriminatory because of race, was forced to take nearly six months off from work due to stress and anxiety. He started working again in February 2019 and stayed there for three months before being fired.

But after a disciplinary hearing in May 2019, he was able to successfully challenge the unfair dismissal and get his job back, but lost it again in November.
