BMW may soon launch an electric maxi-scooter in India

BMW is likely to launch an electric maxi-scooter for the Indian market soon, expect it to be the BMW CE 04, BMW’s current only electric maxi-scooter sold globally. Bavarian Motorrad is very keen to launch an electric scooter in markets like India and China. However, it is still some time before it arrives in the Indian market. But when it does, it won’t be easy on the pocket. The current CE 04 starts with a price tag of Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom) in the overseas market and we expect the scooter to be priced at a slight premium once it is launched in India.

The CE 04 is powered by an 8.9 kWh battery that produces minimum 20 bhp and maximum output of 41.4 bhp and 62Nm of peak torque which covers 0-100 and 120 kmph in under 10 seconds. The scooter delivers a range of 130km as per the World Motorcycle Test (WMTC) programme.

“Electrification is clearly the future, but we have to see its timing, we have the CE 04 electric scooter in our lineup, and we are looking at it for markets like India and China. It is a full-fledged import to start with. And it is too early to say whether we will decide to make it outside Germany.” Marcus Müller Zambre said in an interview with another publication.

“It is our strategy to bring our full range of global products to India and CE 04 is definitely in our view. But we have not taken any concrete decision yet and cannot give a timeline at this point” said Vikram Pava, President Said, BMW Group India

He further added, “The market reality for EVs for cars and two-wheelers is different, so we still need to do a little more study, but as with our existing maxi scooters (C400 GT, priced at Rs 9.95 lakh) indicate, there may be a strong latent demand for a product that doesn’t make much sense on paper”.
