Bombay HC allows Anand Teltumbde to visit his mother for two days

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday allowed Professor Anand Teltumbde, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon caste violence case, to meet his mother after his brother was killed in an encounter.

A division bench of Justices SB Shukre and GA Sanap directed Prof. Teltumbde along with a police escort to visit his mother in Chandrapur for two days between March 8 and 10.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) counsel Sandesh Patil opposed the plea, saying, “The seriousness is that the person who died was a wanted accused who was ambushed.”

The court, however, said, “Death is a death. He may be an accused, he (Milind) may have indulged in activities, but ultimately he was the brother of the present applicant (Anand). There has been loss of human life.”

The court challenging the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Prof. Teltumbde’s petition also sought assistance from Attorney General KK Venugopal.

He had moved the high court after the special NIA court rejected his bail plea on December 1. Professor Teltumbde had on November 23 filed for 15-day bail before the special court, saying he was needed and the family was in mourning. “Being the eldest in the family, his presence will be of great help not only to his 90-year-old mother but also to his younger siblings,” the petition said.
