Book pays tribute to SP Balasubramaniam

Tribute in book released by Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Chitra on singer’s first death anniversary

Indian music had lost one of its greatest singers with the death of SP Balasubramaniam on 25 September last year. He may have sung most of his popular songs in Tamil, but he had a huge fan following in Kerala too.

One of his admirers, KP Sudhera, fiction writer in Malayalam, has come up with a book about the much-loved singer. It will release on Saturday, his first death anniversary.

SPB: Pattante KadlazamPublished by Honey Comb Publishers, runs over 400 pages and includes a biography of SPB, which includes tributes from those who worked with him, such as actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, lyricists Vairamuthu and Sreekumaran Thampi and singers KS Chitra and Mano. Huh. , as well as translations of some of his songs into Tamil and Hindi.

“SPB has been one of my favorite singers and we used to talk on the phone,” says Sudheera. “It is my pity that I could never meet him, although I had known him for more than a decade. When he passed away last year, I felt I needed to write about him. I have been for the past 11 months.” I’m working on the book.”

She says that many friends and colleagues of SPB were happy to share memories of the legend with her. “People like Kamal, Rajinikanth, Vairamuthu and Chitra agreed to talk to me on the phone,” she says. “I would have loved to meet him in person, but it was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SPB’s close friend GV Murali helped me a lot when I worked on the book.

Among the highlights of the book are the splendid tributes by Kamal, Chitra and Vairamuthu. Everyone knows that SPB sang many of Kamal’s lip-sync songs, but Kamal talks about how the singer even dubbed for the actor in Telugu films despite his busy schedule.

In Chitra’s soulful tribute, she talks about her experiences sharing the stage with SPB and her humility, kindness and sense of humour, as well as contracting COVID-19 after interacting with him shortly before her death. Is.
