Ruckus continued in the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday over a fire at the Brahmapuram garbage yard, as opposition UDF legislators protested in the Well of the House before staging a walkout.

Congress-led UDF members sought notice for an adjournment motion during Zero Hour on the police action against their councillors, who protested in front of the Kochi Corporation on Monday against the alleged “failure” of the CPI(M)-led government. To put out the fire.

However, Speaker AN Shamseer did not allow him to present the notice saying that he can present it before the House later.

Furious UDF members stood up and stormed the Well, shouting slogans and carrying placards and banners.

Registering his strong protest, Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly VD Satheesan alleged that he was not even allowed to present the notice to avoid a situation where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would be questioned on the Brahmapuram waste plant fire issue. Will be forced to break his silence.

“The chief minister is running away from the issue… We cannot allow this at any cost,” he said.

However, Speaker Shamseer said that Kerala has over 900 Local Self-Government Departments (LSGDs) and issues there cannot be brought up for discussion in the House.

He repeatedly warned the opposition legislators not to block his view by raising banners, which made no difference to him.

Amid heated debate, the Speaker told some of the protesting MLAs, “You all won by a very narrow margin.” He told Palakkad MLA Shafi Parambil thrice that the Congress MLA would lose his seat in the next assembly elections.

As Shamseer went about the day’s other business, ignoring their protest, the opposition held a parallel session in the Well of the House.

Rosie M John (Congress), who had earlier sought notice for an adjournment motion on police action against councillors, moved it while the actual session was underway on the other side.

Later, they boycotted the proceedings and walked out of the assembly raising slogans.

“The government is facing flak over the Brahmapuram fire incident… The people of the state believe that the fire has happened due to the complete failure of the government. Shouldn’t we bring the brutal police action against our councilors to the Assembly?” Satheesan told reporters outside the House.

The Leader of the Opposition said that a parallel session was held to express our protest in this regard.
