‘Brahmin’ eateries in Bengaluru spark debate on Twitter over ‘casteism’ in India

A Twitter user who goes by @peeleraja shared pictures of restaurants and cafes in Bengaluru using the prefix “Brahmin” in their names available on food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy. Much of Indian society is deeply casteist and the branding of restaurants with caste names has triggered a debate on microblogging platforms, with opinions varying as to whether the tag for the restaurant was a caste sign or not. As these topics often do on social media, there was controversy over the matter.

The Twitter user who shared pictures of the eateries also shared his experience of racism as a kid in school. He explained: “There is no one specific Brahmin dish. There are brahmins in the subcontinent with a variety of dishes including fish and meat. There is no one Brahmin way to decorate your food. When you call your eatery “Brahmin”, it is a plain and simple caste sign and nothing more.

The eateries included Brahmin’s Thatte Idli, Brahmin Express, Amma’s Brahmin Cafe, Brahmin Tiffin & Coffee, among others on Zomato. Swiggy was gifted by Brahmins, Brahmin’s special Puliogare, Brahmin’s kitchen and many others.

In a similar instance in 2018, a Bengaluru-based catering establishment started promoting Shuddh Brahmin lunch box service. Lawyer and activist Dr B Karthik Navayana had posted a picture of a banner advertising ‘Shuddh Brahmin Lunch Box Service’ on micro-blogging site Twitter.

It will apparently deliver freshly cooked ‘Shuddh Brahmin’ food at the doorsteps of interested customers in multiple areas of Bengaluru including Jaypee Nagar and BTM Layout, Puttenahalli, Bilakahalli and adjoining areas, the ad said.

This service was not the first of its kind to be available in the market.
