Britain: Sporting event canceled after Queen’s death

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 on Thursday, several sporting events in Britain were canceled as a mark of respect to the Queen.

The BMW PGA Championship golf event, reacting to the announcement of Queen’s death, immediately suspended play while several players were still off the course at Wentworth and the course and practice facilities would be closed on Friday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board canceled Friday’s play of the second Test match between England and South Africa with no comment on the future of the Test match.

The match announcer said, “We would like to pause to remember Queen Elizabeth II… Our thoughts are with the people of the United Kingdom today. Remember to be part of us in a second of silence.”

While Rafael Nadal offered his “most respectful, sincere and deepest condolences”, former television commentator Gary Lineke tweeted his condolences to the Queen.

He wrote, ‘Very sad day. Truly a remarkable woman who served her country with dignity, loyalty and grace. Always a comforter in the lives of most of us. Rest in Peace, Your Majesty.”

The Welsh Rugby Union thanked the Queen for “years of service on this very sad day”. The Queen was the royal patron of Welsh rugby union.
