Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II will not attend COP26 climate summit: Buckingham Palace

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II made her first engagement on Tuesday after an overnight stay in hospital last week, but Buckingham Palace confirmed she would not travel to Glasgow next week for the COP26 climate summit.

According to the royal family’s website, the monarch was listed as attending a reception as part of the climate change conference on November 1, which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, the palace confirmed on Tuesday evening that the Queen would continue to perform only light duties from Windsor Castle and would not travel to Scotland.

“Following advice to rest, the Queen is doing light duty at Windsor Castle,” a palace statement said.

“Her Majesty has decided with regret that she will no longer travel to Glasgow to attend the evening reception for COP26 on Monday, 1 November. Her Majesty is disappointed not to attend the reception, but a recorded video Will give an address to the assembled delegates through message,” the statement said.

A series of royal COP26 engagements will now include only his son and heir Prince Charles and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as well as grandsons Prince William and wife Kate Middleton between November 1 and 5.

Earlier, the 95-year-old monarch, who lives at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, held a video call audience with the South Korean and Swiss ambassadors at Buckingham Palace.

Gun Kim of South Korea and Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation Marcus Leitner were pictured chatting with the Queen.

“Today the Queen received two ambassadors in the audience via video link from Windsor Castle,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Twitter.

“There are more than 170 ambassadors and high commissioners in London at any given time and each will have an audience with them shortly after taking on the role of Queen,” the statement said.

Last week, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said the Queen had spent a night in a London hospital on Wednesday for a “preliminary investigation” and has since been resting at Windsor Castle.

The Queen stayed at King Edward VII, a private hospital used by the senior royal family – including her husband, the late Duke of Edinburgh, who received treatment there earlier this year. She also skipped her usual church service in Windsor on Sunday.

The pictures showed the Queen in good spirits, showing off her virtual meeting with the ambassadors, who presented her their letters of credit.
