Formula One has issued an update on Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyue following the horrific crash of a Chinese driver on Sunday during the British Grand Prix.

The incident occurred during the opening moments of the race when Pierre Gasly nudged George Russell’s Mercedes. This caused the British driver to lose control and rammed into an Alfa Romeo in Guanyue, causing the car to overturn and slam into obstacles. Immediately the red flag went out and the race was stopped. At least six racers were involved in the accident.

The FIA issued a statement saying that Alex Albon and Guanyue had been taken to a medical center and that both men were conscious.

“The FIA advises that after the incident at the start of the race, emergency teams were in attendance immediately, and that the drivers of Car 23 (Albon) and Car 24 (Zhou) have been taken to a medical centre.

“Both the drivers were conscious and they will be evaluated at the medical centre. Further updates will be given in due course,” the FIA said in the statement.

Now, F1 has tweeted that the Alfa Romeo driver has been declared fit and released from the medical centre.

“Update: Zhou Guanyue has been declared fit and released from the medical centre,” F1 said.

The Halo safety device on the F1 car proved to be a savior for Guanyue as he was able to survive the incident without any major injuries.

The safety device was introduced into the sport in 2016 to protect drivers from flying debris around the track or when the car overturns.

After the incident with Guanyue, many fans thanked the safety device that saved the Chinese driver from serious injury. The British GP ended with Carlos Sainz carrying the checkered flag and Perez and Hamilton finishing second and third respectively.
