Buy only hallmarked jewelery this Diwali: Government tells consumers

Ahead of the Diwali festival, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) of the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has requested all consumers to buy only hallmarked jewellery. BIS insisted that consumers should check the hallmark sign while buying jewellery. If it is not visible, one can ask for a magnifying glass that every jeweler should have in the store.

The knowledge of how to ensure the purity of the gold being purchased and how to get the best value for money is essential, the BIS said.

Center made this year hallmarking of jewelery Mandatory for 14, 18 and 22 carat gold/silver jewelery in 256 districts of the country.

Also, mandatory hallmarking of 20, 23 and 24 carat gold jewelery will be implemented in a phased manner, for which BIS is preparing quality standards.

Only BIS-registered jewelers can sell hallmarked jewellery. Details of BIS registered jeweler in your district can be obtained from BIS website (bis.gov.in).
