The commonly used word when you go to buy an AC is “Ton”.

BTUs for air conditioners range from 5,000 to 24,000.

India The Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted hot weather conditions from March to May and asked people to be prepared for heat waves in the coming months. At this crucial juncture, investing in a quality air conditioner is a wise decision. While buying an air conditioner, customers should be well aware of the various terms in order to make a good choice.

One of the commonly used words when you go to buy an AC is “ton”. There is a widespread belief that ton means the weight of an AC. However, contrary to popular opinion, the ton or tonnage is the unit used to measure tonnage. Keep reading this space to learn more important facts about the term tonnage, which is believed to have been coined by engineer Willis Haviland Carrier.

First of all, let us understand how the cooling capacity is calculated to determine the Ton of AC. The answer to this question is the British thermal unit per hour which is usually denoted as BTU/hour. BTUs for air conditioners range from 5,000 to 24,000 BTUs. 12,000 BTU is considered as 1 ton. A 1 ton AC is generally suited for a room of 50-150 square feet.

Now, another myth associated with ACs is that the higher the BTU, the more powerful the AC. This can be one of the parameters to buy an AC but it cannot be the only metric. If people only consider BTUs, then the AC may not be energy or cost-efficient. While buying a new air conditioner, one should buy ACs with Energy Star certification so that they can save energy.

Apart from keeping BTUs in mind, other aspects to be remembered while buying an AC are room size, lighting and occupancy capacity. Apart from these factors, climate also plays an important role in determining what type of AC one should invest in.
