By-elections 2021 Live Updates: Important elections in 3 Lok Sabha, 29 assembly seats; Polling continues in Bengal and Bihar

Lok Sabha bypolls are being held in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh. Of the 29 assembly constituencies going for by-elections, five are in Assam, four in West Bengal, three each in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, two each in Bihar, Karnataka and Rajasthan and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana. . While today’s by-elections are not expected to have any major impact on the stability of governments, it will be a crucial test for many politicians and some chief ministers. The counting of votes will take place on November 2 and all eyes will be on the major battles in Bihar, Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana.

In the three Lok Sabha constituencies where voting is being held today, sitting members have died. The Mandi seat fell vacant after the death of Ramswaroop Sharma (BJP) in March. The by-election to Khandwa parliamentary constituency was necessitated after the death of BJP member Nand Kumar Singh Chouhan, while in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, it was due to the demise of Independent Lok Sabha member Mohan Delkar.

Dinhata is eyeing the bypolls to four West Bengal assembly seats where TMC veteran Udayan Guha wants to reclaim the seat the BJP snatched from him in the April elections. The bypoll to Dinhata was necessitated following the resignation of Nisith Pramanik, who is now the Union Minister of State for Home, as he decided to retain his Lok Sabha membership. The other three seats will be held in Shantipur in Nadia district, Kharda in North 24 Parganas and Gosaba in South 24 Parganas. In Shantipur too, BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar resigned from the assembly, thus calling for a by-election.

In Madhya Pradesh, by-elections will be held for Khandwa Lok Sabha constituency and Jobat (ST), Raigaon (SC) and Prithvipur assembly seats. The bypolls in Rajasthan’s Vallabhnagar and Dhariyawad are being seen as a crucial test for the performance of the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government.
